The Impact of AMR in Numerical Astrophysics and Cosmology

چکیده

I survey the use and impact of adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) simulations in numerical astrophysics and cosmology. Two basic techniques are in use to extend the dynamic range of Eulerian grid simulations in multidimensions: cell refinement, and patch refinement, otherwise known as blockstructured adaptive mesh refinement (SAMR). In this survey, no attempt is made to assess the relative merits of these two approaches. Rather, the discussion focuses on how AMR is being used and how AMR is making a scientific impact in a diverse set of fields from space physics to the cosmology of the early universe. The increased adoption of AMR techniques in the past decade is driven in part by the public availability of AMR codes and frameworks. I provide a partial list of resources for those interested in learning more about AMR simulations.

New Solutions for Singular Lane-Emden Equations Arising in Astrophysics Based on Shifted Ultraspherical Operational Matrices of Derivatives

In this paper, the ultraspherical operational matrices of derivatives are constructed. Based on these operational matrices, two numerical algorithms are presented and analyzed for obtaining new approximate spectral solutions of a class of linear and nonlinear Lane-Emden type singular initial value problems. The basic idea behind the suggested algorithms is basically built on transforming the eq...

RAMSES: an AMR code of general interest for astrophysics

The RAMSES code, developed under the responsibility of R. Teyssier, is a development platform for solving mainly hyperbolic equation systems in an adaptive mesh refinement structure (AMR). For the time being, the basic mesh is Cartesian. We have planned to extend it to cylindrical and spherical meshing in 2004. The modules that have been developed so far are being massively used in cosmology (p...

Damping of visco-resistive Alfven waves in solar spicules

Interaction of Alfven waves with plasma inhomogeneity generates phase mixing which can cause the dissipation of Alfven waves. We investigated the dissipation of standing Alfven waves due to phase mixing at the presence of steady flow and sheared magnetic field in solar spicules. Moreover, the transition region between chromosphere and corona was considered. Our numerical simulation showed that ...

A Hybrid Amr Application for Cosmology and Astrophysics

We describe an application of Berger and Colella’s [BC89] structured adaptive mesh refinement algorithm to the field of cosmological astrophysics. Simulations in this area must include not just a gaseous component which follows the hyperbolic equations of compressible gas dynamics, but also a collisionless component (such as dark matter or stars) described by the Newtonian dynamical equations. ...

A brief review of neutrino anomalies in particle physics and of the role played by neutrinos in cosmology and astrophysics is presented. The main part of the talk is dedicated to the impact of neutrinos and in particular of neutrino oscillations on BBN and to a possible spatial variation of primordial abundances.
